Lecture: The Language of Textiles in Christian Visual Culture (RUS)

What do the fabrics depicted in icons, frescoes, and mosaics conceal and reveal — and what do they “say” to the viewer? Why do veils and coverings appear so frequently in Christian art, and what role do they play in conveying meaning?

In this lecture, we will embark on a journey through the world of Christian visual culture to decode the secret language of depicted textiles. From early Christian mosaics to late Byzantine frescoes, we will see how fabrics become more than just background or decoration — they serve as powerful symbols of sacred space, divine presence, and mystery.
