31.10.2026 15:00 / Narva Castle

Event overview

Late autumn is a period in many cultures when the dead are believed to visit the world of the living. In Estonian tradition, this is known as hingedeaeg (“the time of souls”), when the spirits of ancestors return to their homes. In the English-speaking world, it is Halloween, the eve of All Saints’ Day, which incorporates pre-Christian Celtic customs.

In keeping with the season, Narva Museum invites visitors on 31 October at 15:00 to discuss the dead from a different perspective: their material remains. The lecture will explore why archaeologists, anthropologists, and other researchers study bones, why some institutions preserve human remains, and the ethical questions surrounding their study and storage.

As a practical component, participants will examine several “spooky” museum objects from Narva Museum’s collection and try to discover what they can reveal about Narva’s former inhabitants.

The number of places is limited, so advance ticket purchase is recommended.
