Postcards in the Narva Museum Photo Collection
Svetlana Andreyeva
Today, in the age of the internet and mobile communication, we encounter traditional postcards far less often than in the past. Yet not so long ago, postcards were one of the most popular means of communication. Before major holidays, families would write and send dozens of cards carrying greetings and warm wishes.
Postcards also hold an important place in museum collections. Despite their apparent simplicity and everyday nature, they have a rich history, and studying them can reveal much about people’s lives, culture, and historical events.
During the lecture, we will trace the history of postcards from their emergence to their development over time. Participants will discover the wide variety of postcard genres, ranging from city views and holiday greetings to satirical illustrations and caricatures. The lecture will also reveal which postcard depicting Narva is considered the oldest in the Narva Museum’s collection.
“Boring-Free Wednesday” is a wonderful opportunity to learn something new, share your memories and thoughts, and meet fellow history enthusiasts.
