25.07.2026 17:00 / Narva Promenade

Event overview

This tour is dedicated to a significant period in Narva’s history (1581–1704), when the city was part of the Kingdom of Sweden.

The “Golden Swedish Age” continues to fascinate historians and researchers today. During this period, Narva became a major trading centre whose control was contested by the great powers of Europe. It was under Swedish rule that Narva acquired its distinctive appearance and unique atmosphere, which remained largely unchanged until the end of the Second World War.
What connects Narva and Stockholm? How did this historical period begin, and how did it come to an end? Together we will explore the city’s development, the key events that shaped its history, and the people who left their mark on Narva. We will walk along the streets of the former Old Town, examine surviving historical buildings, and imagine the lost city as it once was.

The route begins on the Upper Promenade at Hahn’s Staircase and follows both former and present-day streets of the Old Town. Along the way, we will discover the Nordic Baroque mansions built by wealthy burghers and learn why Swedish-era Narva has inspired visitors and artists for centuries. We will also explore the city’s impressive fortifications and learn how they were constructed. The tour concludes at the Swedish Terrace at the foot of Victoria Bastion.
