Event overview

The lecture "The Program of Painting in an Orthodox Church as a Key to Understanding the Eastern Christian Worldview" is the second in the lecture series "Sacred Art" of the open lecture hall of the Narva Museum.

During the lecture, we will become acquainted with the understanding of the structure of church painting and the main factors influencing its creation. Church painting is one of the main ways of pictorial decoration of a church, alongside icons, however, the purpose of painting in the church significantly differs from the purpose of icons. An icon follows its own laws of depiction and is autonomous, i.e., not tied to a specific place, whereas church painting represents a complex of interconnected plots that unfold as one moves through the church. As an example, the painting program of the Narva Icon of the Mother of God Church will be examined.

The lecturer is a research fellow at the Narva Museum, Julia Khlystun. For many years, Julia has been studying the painting programs of Orthodox churches in Ukraine, built in the late 20th and early 21st centuries; she is the author of a series of scientific articles. Julia is originally from Ukraine. In early March, Julia Khlystun was hired at the Narva Museum, and thanks to her knowledge and narrow scientific specialization, the museum is exploring previously unstudied aspects of the city's sacred culture.

The lecture will be conducted in Russian.
