Narva merchant S. Lavretsov and his wife G. Lavretsova began collecting art towards the end of the 19th century. By the early 20th century, their collection had grown so large that they decided to establish a museum. To achieve this goal, Sergey Lavretsov bequeathed his house on Rycarskaya Street to the city. Additionally, he left 25,000 rubles to maintain the museum. In accordance with the couple's wishes, the paintings, artworks, and other items of artistic value in their home were to become the property of the museum after the death of Glafira Lavretsova. The city museum named after the Lavretsov spouses was inaugurated on August 9, 1913, in Narva. The surviving part of the Lavretsovs' collection is a pride of our museum.

Lecturer: Galina Smirnova - historian, research associate-curator at Narva Museum. Her research interests include public organizations and charity in Narva in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the history of the Narva museum.

This meeting is part of a series of lectures from the open lecture hall of Narva Museum. The lectures are held simultaneously onsite, in the museum halls, and online via Zoom.
