The Art Gallery Building

Did you know that as of today, the Narva Museum owns eight hectares of land with historical objects on it, similar to a large landowner? And the Art Gallery building is definitely one of the most interesting.

It was built in 1777 on top of the Gloria Bastion and was intended to house a provision and artillery warehouse necessary for the garrison of Narva Fortress. The building was constructed from stones of the dismantled city wall. The two-story structure had rows of supporting columns at the corners, with tall, narrow windows on each floor. A similar provision store, but built a year later, was erected in the Ivangorod Fortress. In the second half of the 19th century, both buildings were converted into regimental barracks. During World War II, the warehouse building in Narva suffered from a fire but was subsequently restored. Since 1991, the exhibition halls of the Narva Museum's Art Gallery have been located here, showcasing works of famous artists. The collection includes works by Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin, Karl Wenig, Heinrich Buchholtz, Petr Geller, Ardo Sivadi, and many others. The Narva gallery today is one of the centers of artistic life in the city and the region.
