Love Nikolayevna Kiseleva, Professor Emeritus of Russian Literature, longtime head of the Department of Russian Literature and Slavic Studies at the University of Tartu. Author of about 200 scholarly works on the history of Russian culture in the late 18th and 19th centuries, as well as the book "Estonian-Russian Cultural Space" (Estonian edition: Eesti - vene kultuuriruum. Tartu, 2017; Russian edition – Moscow, 2018).
The lecture is dedicated to the fate of the political dissident Timoteus Eberhard von Bock (1787-1836), who in 1818 sent a memorandum to Emperor Alexander I containing sharp criticism of the state system, government policy, and the personality of the tsar. For this bold act, Bock was declared insane and sentenced to nine years in solitary confinement in the Shlisselburg Fortress. Upon release from prison, he lived under house arrest at his estate in Väätsi near Põltsamaa. Jaan Kross chose him as the prototype of the hero of his historical novel "The Imperial Madman".
